Intellectual growth may not be something that made your New Year’s Resolution list, but it’s important for all of us. Surfing the Internet or the TV doesn’t exercise anybody’s mind, but reading usually does. I love to go to the library and check out books by authors I haven’t read. When I find one I like, I usually end up buying all their books. But for intellectual as well as spiritual challenge, there’s a classic I like to recommend. My Utmost for His Highest, by Oswald Chambers.
This is a classic spirituality book, with one page daily devotionals. I recommend you get the updated version, as the original language can be difficult to understand. I know I’m talking about intellectual development, but in my opinion, the updated language allows the reader to focus on the ideas rather than being distracted by deciphering the old-fashioned syntax.
Another great resource for bibliophiles is Goodreads.com. You can read reviews by friends and acquaintances. I’ve already created a large “to read” list on the site.
In our rush to get healthy, let’s not neglect our minds!
