God’s love for us
Valentine’s Day is this week, so all our posts will be about love.
People talk a lot about God and his/her love for us. There are lots of debates: if God loves us, why do bad things happen to good people? The God of the Old Testament is angry but Jesus is loving. God loves us too much to let us sin. God loves us too much to take away our freedom. God loves some people more than others. How can a loving God condemn people to hell?
I’m not going to address those questions, because I’m not a theologian and that’s not the purpose of this blog. Instead I’m going to say this. God does love all of us. That love is mysterious, and like God, difficult to understand at times. But that love surrounds us and sustains us and it is real. This week will be all pink and red and flowers and balloons. Too much emphasis will be placed on sex, romantic love, and chocolate. Kids will drown in cheap paper cards from school, while partners will pick fights or be disappointed. But in all the hoopla, don’t forget: the power that created the entire Universe loves you in particular. Love exists in too many forms to count: celebrate all the love you have!
