Life likes to drop surprises on us, or so it seems. We have lots of sayings about this: “Bad things always happen in threes,” “When it rains, it pours,” “Just when you least expect it,” “If something can go wrong, it will.” April Holmes was faced with a terrible loss when she lost her left leg in an accident in 2001. She recounts how her doctor handed her information about the Paralympics, and she decided that would be “her new dream.”
Change is a part of life, and unfortunately, change for the worse is often just as likely as change for the better. But how do we adapt to these changes? April offers the model of setting new goals. I’m not suggesting that we take time to mourn our losses, or take time to think of a new plan. However, at some point we must move forward. Finding a new dream, a new goal, a new hope, is an excellent path to follow.
